Baru-baru ini ibu membaca buku tulisan Dr. Bruce Miller yang bertajuk A TREASURY OF MINERALS dan ibu telah menemui sesuatu yang menarik untuk dikongsi iaitu kepentingan zinc. Dalam buku tersebut dinyatakan bahawa:
a. zinc plays a vital role in the body 's immune response.
b. zinc supports the immune response by aiding in the production of certain white cells that proliferate to destroy attacking viruses and bacteria.
c. zinc also funtions in the metabolisme of vitamin A and so may be a factor in the proactive effects of this vitamin against certain kind of cancer.

d. zinc appears to play a role in the body 's immune "memory" system.
Certain cellls in your immune system "remember" the disease you have had and protect against your having those disease again. This protection called "acquired immunity" and zinc seems to play an important role in it.
"acquired immunity" is the principle behind vaccination and inoculations: a mild strain of virusses or bacteria is injected into the body so that without your having to suffer through a full-blown illness you get a mild dose and build up antibodies to the disease. The body then "remembers" your having had the illness and protects against your having it again.
What researchers have found, however is that the immune "memory" sometimes doesn"t work. Sometimes it "forgets". And the reason it "forgets" is that the immune memory cells die off- due to zinc deficiency. Apparently a shortage of zinc can actually destroy immune memory cells, making it virtually impossible to vaccinate succesfully against common disease.
Jadi ibu yakin bahawa si ibu yang mempunyai anak yang sering sakit, sekejap demam sekejap selsema mahupun batuk mempunyai masalah kekurangan zinc dalam pengambilan diet harian mereka maka secara langsung memberi kesan ke atas kuantiti zinc dalam susuibu untuk dibekalkan kepada anak mereka.
Seperti yang pernah saya nyatakan dalam post sebelum ini, zinc disarankan untuk diambil bagi kita dewasa adalah sebanyak 15mg sehari , walau bagaimanapun bagi ibu yang mengandung dan menyusukan anak memerlukan tambahan 10mg berbanding keperluan orang biasa. Apakah makanan yang mengandungi zinc

?Jenis makanan yang mengandung zinc antara lain oyster, kerang, bayam, kacang almond, dan biji bunga matahari. Namun jika si ibu tidak dapat menyediakan makanan ini dalam menu masakan harian maka disarankan mengambil multivitamin yang mengandungi RDA zinc atau tambahan tablet zinc dalam diet harian.
